Red Sox to aquire Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell from Marlins
Quote:
ESPN.com news services
The winter clearance sale at Florida Marlins headquarters is about to officially begin. That Josh Beckett is about to leave the racks doesn't seem to bother him a bit.
The Red Sox and cost-cutting Marlins have come to a tentative agreement on a trade that would send Beckett, the MVP of Florida's 2003 World Series win over the Yankees, and three-time All-Star third baseman Mike Lowell to Boston for highly touted shortstop Hanley Ramirez, right-handed prospect Anibal Sanchez and a minor-league pitcher.

So long Hanley and Sanchez, we hardly knew ye.
Looks like the famed "Yankee Killer" will now be wearing a Boston uni. I can't seem to wipe the happy smile off my face. What a deal.

Looks like Florida got reamed. This was a clear salary dump (see: Mike Lowell), and its shocking that Florida couldn't get more for Beckett. Real clowns run that franchise.
Who is doing the wheeling and dealing for Boston since you jerks ran off Theo?
In other news from Jayson Stark's Rumblings and Grumblings:
Quote:
The best closer on the market, Billy Wagner, keeps saying his decision on where to play won't be all about money. Which makes the entrance of the Braves into the Wagner derby a potentially uncomfortable development for both the Mets and Phillies.
"I want to go with the team where I think I'd be the most comfortable and a team that has a chance to win," Wagner told Rumblings. "And Atlanta always has a chance to win."
The Red Sox also are nibbling on Wagner. But though Wagner says the right things about the Sox, there have been indications from people who know him that Boston's offseason turmoil has made him nervous about committing there.
|
Another quote from the Daily Herald:
Quote:
|
Furcal’s decision could come down to more than money. Furcal apparently likes playing for Atlanta manager Bobby Cox, and if a Cubs offer doesn’t blow the Braves completely out of the water, there’s a chance Furcal could remain in Atlanta.
|
This is the sort of reward having a professionally run organization like Atlanta brings. Heck, players even *give* money back to play for Atlanta. I'm just astounded at how well John Schurholz and Co. run the Braves. This is the reason Atlanta wins so consistantly, there is just a culture of winning.

Hopefully the Yanks don't go after Delgado like Gammons said they were (which I don't trust at all really, he's a joke when it comes to this kind of stuff, especially with the Yankees).

Hanley = Overrated.
You could see a resurgance by Lowell in front of the Green Monstrosity. They should bulldoze that dump.

So when's Manny leaving? Oh, and congrats on trying to buy a championship. I never want to hear that reference about NYY from Sox fans again.

I love how posts regarding the red sox are taken as offense to Yankee fans here.
How exactly is trading for two guys who make a combined 15 million a season and trading away a 20 million a season player BUYING players? Also, trades aren't what I would call buying, getting all available free agents because you outbid everybody else is buying. Sox payroll will be lower next season compared with this season since 3 rookies appear to have spots on the team next year with Youkillis also making the team minimum.

The only reason this deal was made possible is because Florida is having a firesale. Florida is doing this deal is to dump salary. Boston is one of the few teams (by few I mean New York and Boston) which is able to take on dump contracts. Florida basically gave Boston a Cy Young calibre pitcher for just money. Thats the definition of buying players.

For just money? Florida is looking to get younger and less expensive, so in exchange for an aging overpaid player and 2 top notch pitchers (Mota was thrown into the deal) they recieved 2 of the best prospects in our system. This will in no way raise our team salary because in order to gain, we have to lose. In New Yorks case, their team salary will only increase since they have tended to increase in salary around 20 million per season over the last 5 seasons. Meanwhile, Boston's salary has been practically the same over the last few years, and will actually fall in the next few years.

Manny probably will end up leaving, and if he wants out that badly let him go. He's irreplacable in the lineup, and we won't get equal value for him but at least he's a salary dump.

No, younger has very little to do with it. They're just looking to get less expensive.

Boston recieved two top notch *major league* players. Florida received two overrated *prospects*. Prospects does not equal major leauge. This was just a salary dump, admit it.

Just because you say they'll deal Manny doesn't mean they actually will. At this point they've added two good players because they were willing to take on the contract of a third player who had a bad year. Taking on contracts of players you don't want to get players you do want it basically buying. Doesn't matter how you boil it down.
