Here's our current situation. We just bought a 34" Toshiba Widescreen HDTV that we are getting on Tuesday, and I was wondering what cables are the best for our needs. I've heard that Monster Cables are fairly good, but very overpriced, and it sure seems that way. I'm looking for Component Cables for our DVD Player.
Thanks.

You pay more for the Monster but they ARE the best, and you will notice the difference.

You won't notice one iota of a difference between Acoustic Research and Monster Cables....other than the amount of cash left over in your wallet. Don't fall for the hype.
Monster = overpriced mass produced decent quality cables
insert other namebrand here = competively priced decent quality cables
If you do want high quality cables, you won't find it at a B&M store like Best Buy. Check out

Thanks man. I'll check into Acoustic Research and see if they are available around these parts. I'll also keep the high quality cables in mind for when I set up my system in the future.

AR cables are the one's that Best Buy normally sells and they are of course tons cheaper than monster. I've talked to several electrical engineers that have said the same thing that lynx just spoke on. For monster you pay for the brand name and not the quality.

I got my cables through http://www.pacificcable.com
Great quality and REAL cheap. Check them out before you buy any Monster crap.

Doesn't Monster Cable offer a Lifetime guarantee on their cables though? I know it was a over the counter exchange for me when my cat chewed through my cables.

Alright. I have one question. Futureshop doesn't seem to sell the Master series from Acoustic Research, nor the Pro II series, so I'm wondering, what would the normal Acoustic Research series of cables be comparable to in Monster Cable tiers?

Cryo, exactly what cables are you talking about? Component video, HDMI, DVI,... ?
Generally speaking, Lynx is right. Monster is hideously overpriced. Generally a good product, but not worth the cash. I'd suggest for a digital interface though, good cables are a waste of funds. If it's good enough to get the signal there, then it's perfect. For digital audio, I always buy the cheapest wal-mart brand I can find. I used to buy high end cables for digital, but have not been able to tell a difference (although some will surely disagree with me because of jitter, something I've never been able to personally detect).

I agree on getting the cheapest optical cable. I cringe everytime I see someone spend $60+ on a uber shielded optical cable that is only 2 feet long.
I'm not sure on your question cryo. Haven't had experience, or seen all of the classifications of Acoustic Research cables. If you are in doubt, another brand I've had good experience with is Radio Shack's Gold Series. I have quite a few of those doing some very long runs.

Is your DVD player a progressive scan player? If not, you won't be able to get digital quality. Assuming that your DVD player is, simply get a set of Component Video cables. I have the most expensive Monster Component cables in existence and I am hard pressed to see any difference between those and a set of Accoustic Research. AR does a good job, so, don't hesitate in saving some cash...it's a solid product.

Yes, the DVD player does have Progressive Scan. Which set of Acoustic Research cables do you have, the ones without any other name attached to them?
