Miyamoto: Today's games "too long"
Legendary Nintendo designer tells CNN/Money that he's turned off by games' increasing length; drops Revolution hints.

The creator of Donkey Kong is sick of games--or most of them anyway. That's what legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto told CNN/Money in Chris Morris' latest Game Over column.
"There's not a lot I want to play now," the mind behind Mario and Zelda told Morris. "A lot of the games out there are just too long. Of course, there are games, such as Halo or Grand Theft Auto, that are big and expansive. But if you're not interested in spending that time with them, you're not going to play."
Besides pooh-poohing longer games, Miyamoto also bashed Sony and Microsoft's flashy PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 demos at last month's E3. "Most of what you're seeing are not even the first projections of games," he said. "They're just shiny computer graphics. They're things anyone using a computer can do."
Unsurprisingly, Miyamoto talked up Nintendo's upcoming console, the Revolution. "It's how we're going to use the technology that separates us," he said. "What we want to do is different--and we're happy with the road we're taking. When you have a Revolution, you're not going to have the same experience as you would with the other home consoles."
But while long on praise, the game designer--whose latest creation, Nintendogs, is taking Japan by storm--was short on detail about the Revolution. He did, however echo Nintendo president Satoru Iwata's statements that the console will be aimed at turning non-gamers onto the joys of gaming. "We asked ourselves 'why would a family need or want to have a gaming console?' The answer is what's driving development of the Revolution."

Nintendo are fuckin idiots. This statement is just as stupid as "Internet Gaming isn't important." Shut the fuck up and give gamers what they want. God, grow some balls, get a fuckin clue, and give us length, difficutly, and online play. It's not that much to ask for, but it's killing you Nintendo!!! :curse: :curse: :curse:

We already know Nintendo will be in 3rd by a long shot. I personally want longer more epic scale games though.

If you look at all the reviews of nearly every game released over the past 5 years, what do you think will be the most common complaint among them? "The game was too short."
Nintendo really has their head up their ass. What happened to them?

They have a Vision(tm) and will follow it, regardless of what the public WANTS. I'm just a believer they are content with where they are, since they are very profitable margin wise concidering their place in this/next gen.

Personally, I think it depends what game it is, as to how long it should be. RPG? 80 hours is about right. Racing game? 12 hours, plus replayability is fine for me. FPS? 20 hours plus online multiplayer. It all depends on the game.
Nintendo is not stupid, and they're not going away. They have always been a company about games (once they started games, that is). I don't think they could give two sh!ts about being 3rd in the console war as long as they can continue to bring games to gamers and maintain a nice, fat profit margin (which they do). I'll be gteting a Rev as soon as Mario Kart hits it, if not sooner.

Yes, get ready for the REVOLUTION! Soon we will have more and more MARIO and POKEMON games! Never before seen now Mario will have....wait for it....wait for it....LIGHT red pants!!!
But seriously Nintendo is a joke they don't put out anything worthwhile except Zelda. Their handhelds are garbage and they purposely handicap them by leaving things out like a headphones plugin or a backlite screen. But don't worry I am sure they will puke out some more Mario varients because no one ever gets tired of the same stupid shit over and over.

Actually, this press release identified a market strategy that both Microsoft and Sony have been ignoring - spreading the gaming audience. Microsoft and Sony are playing the game of competing for the current gaming audience. They're doing what the public "wants". I'm not saying there's anything wrong with this, but it is only one way to get sales. If Nintendo actually achieves the goal of "spreading" the gaming audience, and does it well, then they could easily outsell both Microsoft and Sony. Of course, there'd have to be some action to back this up before we could even attempt to project success - something more than what this statement provided.

I'm not arguing, just asking, but how do you see that Nintendo is doing what the public "wants"? Nintendo seems to be doing everything the public doesn't want. Short games, no violence, etc. etc. If Nintendo was doing what the Public 'wants', Link would be chopping people's heads off saying "fuck you bitch." Then nailing the life out of Zelda at the end. (Come on people, sex and violence sells).

I wasn't trying to say that Nintend is doing what the public wants - I was saying Microsoft and Sony are. Of course, we shouldn't say public. We should say the active gaming public. But we must admit that the active gaming public is a minority compared to the public as a whole. The PR said that Nintendo was going to try to target some of this non-gaming public. If this means they make decisions contrary to what the current gaming public desires then it is still a good decision if it is largely successful in this stated goal.
Halo's great, but Myst and Tetris reached a MUCH broader audience. If Nintendo can reach that audience, or a bigger one, then their sales will dwarf X360 and PS3. Of course, if that was easy, everyone would be doing it. For now it's just vaporware until they step up with some details.

That's a good point, but I don't buy it working.
I might end up getting a Revolution after price drop, but for me it will be in spite of Nintendo's seemingly odd decisions, not because.
Hope it does work out though, I still love them, I just think they're a little cuckoo.

Keep in mind the times. Something tetris like nowadays wouldn't sell at all. Everyone had/played Tetris because back then, there was only the one system and this one of the few games, and one of the few that appealed to alot of people. Something like this won't happen with this many competitors and this many titles a year.

I agree with Duke also, Nintendo to the general "mainstream", if you will, public, has seemingly already labeled Nintendo as "kiddy". Super Nintendo era; for Mortal Kombat, and the lack of violent games on the 64 and Gamecube. Resident Evil was a start, but for whatever reason, they thought Biohazard alone would bring them out of that sterotype they are in. Had they kept with it, or advertised a real mature game they had with Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem to the public, and not people watching the World Cup at 4:00am in the morning, that might've helped a little. Nintendo is horrible at marketing, and I honestly don't ever see them gaining any reason public attention, unless they get an exclusive that of the violent/mature calibur of Grand Theft Auto, or Conker. Again, Nintendo had a gem in Conker, but they lost it to Microsoft by never buying out Conker or Rare for that matter. Nintendo has Zelda which does no longer appeal to the "mainstream" public. It more or less appeals to those who have followed the game since the first up till Ocarina of Time/Wind Waker. Now, I can't say I would like the change, but if Link was cutting some throats, and slicing heads off, that would get some serious attention, and don't act like it wouldn't. What they do seems to work fine in Japan, but if they want Americans to "get" Nintendo, they really need to pull of some real Mature titles to make up for the "kiddy" image they've got on their rep right now.

If the next Mario Kart is anywhere near as fun as Double Dash!! then I'm going to be in hog heaven with that game alone, since it's a no-brainer that it'll be online. My wife and I played DD for 6 months straight, every night and had a blast, and I can see us playing it for 2 years straight with online capabilities.
For most, blood/gore/shock value matter, but for me it doesn't. I grew up with Nintendo, and there wasn't violence then. I'm mature now, but I still know how to pick up a non-violent game and have fun.

But sadly, most do not, and it's because of that Nintendo isn't recognized for the games they do make that are fantastic.
I <3 Animal Crossing.

It's funny that you say Nintendo's handhelds are garbage. It's odd that they've been on the top of the handheld market since, lets say, they released the original Game Boy. The GBA SP is by far one of the best handhelds out there, as it does what handhelds are made to do: play games.
Nintendo has had a history of not implementing features until they are certain it's efficient enough. The GBA SP, a backlit GBA with a rechargable battery that lasts 10 hours (Or more). As for your comment about the exclusion of the headphone plug, there is simply not enough room for it in the SP while still offering methods for expansion. Personally I dont play handhelds with headphones. Missing the music and sounds does not take that much out of the experience.

Personally, I think the guy has turned into a grumpy old man. He's an old school legend and personally, he is stepping backwards, which isn't a good thing, obviously.
What's going to seperate the Revolution from the PS3 and X360 is going to be kinda like now, I think, where Nintendo focusses on adolescent gamers and going back to basics whereas Microsoft and Sony are going to focus on the true next generation. I think Microsoft is the smartest by having a huge focus with on-line gaming, though.

You know, I just thought of a supporting data point here. I personally witnessed Donkey Konga sell 2 Gamecube units to the wives of men I couldn't talk into getting Xboxes. And these were gamer men. Just a data point of Nintendo marketing successfully to the non-standard gamer.
