WASHINGTON -- Two centuries later, Congress wants the world to know who helped construct the building they work in.
Congressional leaders have announced that a task force will be created to study the history of slave labor that was used in the construction of the U.S. Capitol.
Historians have said slaves were the largest labor pool when Congress decided to build a new national capital in 1790.
Local farm owners from Virginia and Maryland started to rent slaves for an average of $55 a year to help create the White House, the Capitol and the new city streets.
One member of the task force said they study is "long overdue."Another congressman said next year's opening of the new Capitol visitors' center might be a good venue for recognizing the slaves.
Why do I smell "reperations" coming out of this "study"..
