The first in a trilogy, Advent Rising should ship sometime next week (IGN still has May 31 as it's street date). And from what I've seen, the game looks like it could be a solid, action-packed title. Everything about the game so far has me stoked, and w/ Majesco's current status as one of my favorite publishers, I will surely get this the day it comes out.

For the uninitiated, here's some Advent Rising info from around the net.

STORY:

At the dawn of interstellar reasoning, as the first intelligent races took to the stars and began to interact with each other, they discovered a common thread – the legend of an ancient race that would one day “deliver” the universe. This race was known as the Humans.

The Seekers alone held the key to the secret of the humans. Humanity did in fact exist, and the Seekers were doing all that they could to eradicate them. Under the guise of “benevolent explores” they spread methodically through out the galaxy destroying all human life they came in contact with.

Consequently, the Seekers did in fact discover many new races and helped introduce them into the galactic arena. This served the Seekers two fold. It allowed them to constantly spread their influence and strengthen their military and civic control of the galaxy, and it allowed them to retain and magnify their image of philanthropic nobility.

The Aurelian culture was rich with tales of humanity. When they were discovered by the Seekers many of their legends rekindled long dormant ideals within the galactic senate.

With the added insight, knowledge, and technology that interstellar society offered the Aurelian’s, it was not long before the Seekers duplicity was discovered. Enraged, the government formed a small covert faction within the Aurelian military to gather as much information about Seeker operations as possible. It was because of this group that Edumea, a small world inhabited by humans, was first discovered and a rescue organized.

With the introduction into the galactic senate close at hand, and the promise of power and wealth looming overhead, many governing Aurelian officials began to doubt the plan to help the humans. They argued that if discovered they would be completely destroyed by the Seekers. It was their opinion that in order to save themselves and insure their place in the senate, their policy on humanity should be to simply look the other way.

With growing dissention within the government it was feared that the Seekers would discover the Aurelian’s plans, and consequently discover the planet of Edumea. Knowing this, the Aurelian head sent a small diplomatic force to Edumea. The humans were to be warned of their plight and aided in any way possible.

As initial steps are being taken toward healing the scars that warfare has left on the battered Edumean civilization, the Aurelians arrive. A diplomatic entourage is quickly formed by the newly established coalition government—a dozen representatives of humanity to make this pivotal first contact with an alien race. Ethan Wyeth, a world-renowned fighter pilot and war hero is the obvious choice to pilot this vital assembly to first contact. Using his fame and influence, he has his younger brother, Gideon (the player), assigned as co-pilot for the mission. From earliest childhood, Ethan has often relied on his brother’s level-headedness and clear thinking to support him in unpredictable situations, and this will be no exception.

Looking good to me. I hope the story is compelling, and the gameplay intuitive, and the game itself a good 15-25 hours, if not longer.

Anybody else getting this interesting little title here?

I have been loooking forward to this title for over two years! The story is penned by the best Sci-Fi author ever! That is Orson Scott Card, the man who gave us Ender's Game and the Ender series. Good, good stuff.

The game lookes like it can be very good. The story at least will be intriguing. But it looks like it could go either way, so we will just have to wait and see.

I have the game paid off, but will most likely just check it out before I buy it...

What makes me sad is that they pushed back Advent Shadow - it's PSP sister title...

Guilty Spark: Ender's Game is great, yeah? The kind of book every gamer should read. One of the biggest plot twists ever, too. Fantastic bit of sci-fi. Still haven't read the rest of the series, though. One day, one day.

I'm interested in Advent Rising because of the writing, actually. I think the collaboration is interesting, and to see how it pans out will be half the fun. So many sci-fi books would translate into great video games, IMO. I'd love to see Williams' "Hardwired" turned into a game. It'd be perfect for it.

Should have Advent Rising in less than a week. :bang:

I will get this for sure. I am also looking forward to the PSP version, which is more like a part II.

Yeah I think this will be the first game I will buy since Halo 2.

I still don't like the cartoonish style (maybe they neee A texture artist  )- but the rest of the game could be make it an epic.

The presentation is a technical nightmare, the story is poorly told, and the modicum of uniqueness the gameplay has to offer is almost completely murdered by sloppy mechanics and a myriad of bugs. - Alex Navarro

Can't say this is at all unexpected from Majesco. I fuckin hate Majesco, why are they not out of business.

I see IGN gave it like a 7.5. Yipes I guess its not a must buy, more like a rent and forget.

Yep, that's what I've been hearing. Game is A) short (10 hours play time and no multi) and B) has framerate issues. Some people seem to love the game anyway, but I imagine I'll rent if anything. Too bad, was looking forward to it.

Oh well, GTA:SA will keep me busy until Conker hits the shelves.

Put it in the system at work today. That was mistake 1.

When you start it's kinda cool, you fly a ship and have to dock, but it has a very cinematic feel.

Soon as you learn how to shoot and everything, it only goes downhill. Terrible graphics, decent CG, horrible animations, bad warping and clipping. You auto target and lock onto guys, so you coudl be running and if you guy appears next to you to auto face him. You can see where that will lead to with camera issues.

Very very not impressed, specially for the price point. But least you have a chance at winning a million dollars, hell, they need some gimmick to sell it.

Yeah, that is purely a gimmick, the million dollar contest. Like Majesco knew the game was gonna bite it, so they figured tossing some money around might make people buy it anyway.

Too bad, Majesco, you were on a roll for a bit there. I still give them big props for bringing Phantom Dust stateside, though.

And as far as GTA:SA is concerned, I've decided to hold off any more Xbox game purchases until Conker. Pretty much only looking forward to a few new Cube games, and the 360 and PDZ/Oblivion.

[I had to say it]; And you think GTA:SA would be a better buy than Advent Rising? :booty:

thrAsher
June 4th, 2005, 02:11 PM
Hehehe. Uh, actually, yes. I could play a game for 100's of hours (most likely) for my $50 (GTA SA) or I could play a buggy, freshman effort of a game (AR) for 10 hours for the same amount of dough.

Common sense, IMO. But, when I think about the whole 5 hours of un-fun I had playing GTA III, I have to tell myself to pass on this one. Can't imagine it NOT getting boring after about a day of play. Hell, people loved Mercenaries and I got bored to death w/ it in a matter of hours, same as GTA III and VC. I still play GTA 2 on my PC from time to time, and have way more fun w/ that than any of the 3D iterations.

And LTM, I just realized, have you ALWAYS been LTM360? Talk about a co-een-ee-deenk, eh? Oh, btw, get the hell on Live and play me some games, dude. WoW isn't going anywhere, man. And tell Alpha Bonera I said hello, if he's still amongst the living. :)

Yeah I have been. Kinda sucks cause I don't want people to think that I just stole from Microsoft to make my gamertag LTM360. I'll just change it to "Danik" eventually. I'll tell Alpha you said hello, we play WoW on a daily basis. If I do recall, you did say you were getting the game eventually. You could always buy WoW and say hello, he's on everyday, as is myself.

Cheddawedge (Alpha) - Level 47 Taruen Druid
Danik (me) - Level 45 Orc Shaman

I love this game so much. :)
