As some of you may know, I just bought a new house, had to buy a new truck cause my car got vanadalized/torched, and in general, life is just damn expensive.

Anyhow, my wife is on maternity leave, and she just got word that her department is shutting down, and she is losing her job. What sucks though is that she is already collecting unemployment benefits for maternity, so we will not get any more money once this runs out. On my salary alone, I can cover the mortgage and Car, and some bills, but that is about it (roughly 3000$ a month). Without her income, we can't eat, buy clothes or other essentials, and my kid can't have anything. I basically just got screwed over good. Our savings got depleted with the downpayment for the house, furniture, and other essentials and costs that came up with the house.

I have a little to fall back on, but if she does not find something else with a decent salary by September, we are screwed. This also means she will have to cut her mat leave short, and my kid is going to have to be put into daycare which is going to run us about 200$ a week earlier than expected, he is only 6 months old!!!!

I really don't know what to do. It is too early to start thinking about dumping the house, and we need our truck (we live in the suburbs a.k.a Farmland).

I am on such a downer right now, my stomach is in knots, I want to kill someone right now.

Brother, from one Canadian to another, that sucks to hear. However, look towards the positive side - Montreal is a big city that has plenty working opportunities. I'm sure that your wife will be able to get something new before time runs out.

If you want, I've made a business idea that I can throw to you. It might be a little time consuming, but if you give it a shot and suceed, money will be coming it.

Oh, by the way, how the fuck did your last car get torched?

Street kids busted out the window and lit the interior roof fabric on fire, basically the whole inside caught fire and everything melted, car was a write-off.

Another thing to add is that I have been investing cash trying to start-up a side PC repair/support business, this has eaten some cash, and I have not yet seen any results with exception for a few cash jobs I have done. This will have to be put on hold as well.

We were also trying to have another kid, my wife actually may be pregnant, we were going to take the test this Friday. If it is positive, then I am going to find myself a second job.

Now Jeff, I have no idea what your wife specializes in, but I looked up the latest job offerings from monster.ca that were in the Montreal area. Couldn't find a search result for Laval, but hey, it's close enough:

Thnx Stifler,

She has a Bachelor's in Commerce, major in marketing, but she has always worked as a Project Manager. She is actually working for Ericsson now, but once again the layoffs and department closures are hitting.

I am sure she can find something, but she will have to start fairly soon. Unfortunately it will be my son that will suffer from this. 6 months is really too young to be put in a strangers care IMO. If my wife is pregnant, there is no way she can work. I will have to take it upon myself to find a second job. I will not see my family much, but hey, you do what you gotta do.

Alright then, we've got something in common - you're wife majored in business and so have I. Consider this option, I've been working on this for a while now but I haven't got a chance to do this yet.

Processing Unclaimed Bank Accounts
What you'll need
-PC
-Internet
-Phone

Canada has hundreds of thousands of dollars in unclaimed bank accounts that are worth over millions of dollars. Using the Bank of Canada website you can easily help people process these accounts from home.

http://ucbswww.bank-banque-canada.ca/scripts/search_english.asp

Using the search engine from the bank of Canada unclaimed bank balances section, just type in some names (best type in names of people in your city first, use your phone book). Type in smith, and you'll get a whole bunch of results of people with the name smith that have balances that they don't know about and haven't claimed.

The part I haven't mastered yet.

Finding these people is easy, the hard part comes next. Contacting them, getting them to believe they have unclaimed money, get them to sign a contract, help them process the unclaimed bank account, and you get a percentage of that money for commish.

If I wasn't so busy with my current job I'd actually try this. If your wife wants to try this out she can do it right at home. Consider it.

Edit: Oh yeah, if you actually want to try it, I've got some contracts that I made that I can give to you to use for your clients.

One more thing to add, my wife just called. We received our 1600.00$ welcome tax bill from the Government. Once again, money taken out of hard working people's pocket. Now September turned to August.

Well, I have no house, nor do I have a new truck, but I have had to go into capital hibernation before and can tell you what I do.

Is this truck absolutely necessary? I live in the suburbs and have lived in the absolute sticks before and never needed a truck. Eliminating that truck payment would be the best thing you could do. I mean, hell, you can always buy another truck when everyone is on their feet again. Keep in mind, you cannot eat a truck.

Eliminate any unneeded services. Have a second phone line? Drop it.

Call your phone company, see if you can get a better plan to save you some cash.

Start turning off the lights and appliances as soon as your done with them.

Being that you are in the suburbs, your house may have a fireplace or woodstove. Use it.

Any luxury service will basically have to go. In otherwords, if you have a maid that comes in once a week to clean your house? Tell wanita you will not need her services for a while.

Cancel magazine subscriptions.

Right before you purchase anything that is not milk, food, or gasoline, stop, put your wallet away, go home and beat your wife.. LOL, seriously though, NO NEW PURCHASES no matter how trivial. The occasional 6pack is ok, unless it is a choice between Molson or baby formula.

Coming from a very large family with a lot of children, I can tell you there are about a million ways to save money with babies. When one of my uncles lost his job right after his second son was born, they eventually went to using cloth diapers just to save cash. It worked for the two months he was out of work. Hell, even the Kennedy's use handme downs for kids 2 and under so don't be afraid to ask a friend who has an older child if he has any of that kids older clothes. Me and my girlfriend were giving those things away all the time.

If you or your wife grocery shop like me, then there is plenty of room to save money. Me, I just go to the supermarket see what I need and just buy it. I don't sit there and compare prices on this and that and when all is said and done, had I done so, I probably could have saved $20 or so. That is a habit that has to change.

Basically, pinch every penny so hard you end up making copper wire out of it and you will be suprised how much money you can save in a month. When you are back on your feet again, you will also be surprised how many of those habits stick with you and in the end save you even more money when it isn't even your #1 priority anymore. My father who makes very good money will still throw a shitfit when anyone say leaves a light on in a room nobody is occupying. When I visit him, sometimes I will just do it on purpose to get under his skin. Yet, whenever he wants to buy something, he has the cash for it.

I dunno, hope this helps..

We will be going over the finances tonight and cutting out anything that is not a necessity right now. Basically the second cell phone, call display, call waiting, additional Digital cable box and outlet, landscaping work will have to be put on hold (hopefully I will not lose my deposit). Everything will be reassessed.

A brief list of things that I am cutting out:

Second cell phone
Call waiting, call display, voicemail
Additional Digital cable box
Beer
Any unnecessary purchases (no more leisure spending)
Calling the dealer to see what possibilities I have on trading in my truck for a more "economical" vehicule
Reduced my TV package to the basic package
Cancelled landscaping and additional renovations scheduled for next month
Cancelling high-speed internet (will use dial-up connection to work)
Walmart and other weekly store shopping to be cut by 50%
Grocery budget of 75$ a week
Halting all RRSP and investments for the time being

I am starting to feel like a real peasant.

Save yourself money on your phone bill with switching to Vonage - Hit me up on AIM (clancouncil - casperddc ain't working right now) and I'll give you a referral if you want- it's $24/month USD and I know it's working in Canada now. Unlimited long distance, free - caller ID, 3 way calling, call waiting and calls to US/Canada - cheap as hell and runs over high speed- best way to save some money there.

Instead of cable, compare their prices to going with satellite, in the US, it's much cheaper and beneficial to switch to satellite.

Sucks to have a tight budget, but it will show you more on what really matters at the same time. Watched Hotel Rwanda the other night and it has the same effect lol

Casper you really think Vonage is that good? 24.00 a month for voice mail, caller id, call waiting, 3 way, unlimited long distance?

Yup *but I just noticed that Chronik is ditching his broadband, u need that for Vonage. The voice clarity that I get with Vonage is extremely better than I got with Verizon's basic lines. VoIP is the way to go. I've not one bad thing to say about Vonage - people can't believe that it's not a regular phone line, and some even say that it sounds extremely better than regular phones.

No, you can user any phone wherever you want. If you decide to buy a phone from the 21st century, they have ones now that are wireless. They are great, they work all over the house and no more cord to tangle with. Another feature is you get to use buttons instead of putting your finger in that big dial for every number.

I have a vonage line, I don't use it much, but it is so cheap, y not?

Update: My wife was able to find a new job, she received an offer, not really in her ballpark, so she has to counter-offer on Monday.

Problem: Just took a pregnancy test, positive. Second child on the way. This equals some major screwation. It is hard to take a new job when you will be off on Maternity leave in a few months.

Arghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

Things could be worse, at least I am going to be a dad for the second time. :)

Well less money certainly does suck, but if you're wife was making a six figure annual income I wouldn't complain. Then again, you seem disappointed so I take it that 15K less will hit you pretty hard. Things will come around, hopefully soon, but just keep checking Monster for the latest in your area. It's how I landed some good jobs.

Keep your head up, man. We all go through rough times in our lives, you just have to plow through them. Everything will turn out great for you and your family. Itll just take a little time. I was talking to a guy yesterday who was homeless for a week, no money etc. He lived under a bridge but wouldnt let himself quit and say "oh well, im homeless" He got out there and found himself a job. Now he has his own apartment that he's been living in for two days(He was homeless last week) and hes doing great. Just keep your head up and stay strong for the little ones.

Update:

House is going up forsale this weekend. We re-examined everything and figured we could save about 800-1000$ a month by renting. We predict we will make about 25 grand of the sale of the house, so this should get us by and allow my wife to be a stay at home mom and raise the kids.

I guess all in all, everything will eventually work itself out.

I get a bit of a ass ramming yesterday too. Maybe not as bad as you Fixxxer, but a good one none the less.

Got home to find a letter from my wifes OBGYN. Apparently our insurance company AETNA is refusing to negotiate a new contract with him. So as of June 1st he will no longer be her OBGYN. Now I know that sounds like nothing, heres the problem.

My wife suffers from PCOS (Polysistic Ovarian Syndrome) basically her ovaries have a THICK skin around them, instead of a thin skin. This causes her to no ovulate, which inturn fucks up her period. She can go for months without a period, but then have a period for 6 months. Plus these aren't just any kind of period. She will bleed heavily, so heavily she can barely walk at times. She passes clots, she has awakened in the middle of the night in a pool of blood.

She had been to 3 seperate doctors until our primary doctor referred us to this guy. The previous doctors where all either idiots or uninterested and simply put her on birth-control to "regulate the period" which it hasn't. So when she started seeing this guy, he tried other things, he performed surgeries not only in a effort to control the period but to help us have a child which at this stage is gonna be nearly impossible. She has been really comfortable with this doctor and she fell apart lastnight when she read this letter. Now i have to spend all day complaining to various places about this bullshit as if its gonna do any good.
