LOS ANGELES--Today saw the second of the big three console makers announce their next-generation platform. At its pre-E3 press conference, Sony Computer Entertainment gave the world its first look at the PlayStation 3, as it now is officially called.

The name was not unexpected, since Sony had been running an extensive teaser-ad campaign prepping the public for the PlayStation 3. The company had laid a blanket of posters around the Los Angeles Convention Center, site of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (aka E3). Bus stalls and billboards around the convention center proclaimed "Prepare for Chang3" in the distinctive PlayStation font with partial shots of the Dual Shock controller's square-circle-triangle-X buttons.

Sony also confirmed the PlayStation 3, will use Blu-Ray discs as its media format. The discs can hold up to six times as much data as current-generation DVDs. It will also support CR-ROM, CDR+W, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats. It also confirmed the machine would be backward-compatible all the way to the original PlayStation. It will also have slots for Memory Stick Duo, a SD slot, and a compact flash memory slot. It will also sport a slot for a detachable 2.5 inch HDD somewhat similar the Xbox 360's.

Out of the box, the PS3 will have the capability to support seven Bluetooth controllers. It will also have six USB slots for peripherals--four up front and two in the back.

Sony also laid out the technical specs of the device. The PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2 Ghz, giving the whole system 2.18 teraflops of overall performance. It will sport 256mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 Ghz, and have 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700mhz.

Sony also unveiled the PS3's graphics chip, the RSX "Reality Synthesizer based on Nvidia technology. The GPU will be capable of 128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution, some of the highest HD resolution around. It also has over 300 million transistors, larger than any processor available commercially today. It was manufactured using the 90nm process with 8 layers of metal. The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 ultras, which would cost rough $1000 if bought today.

The PlayStation 3 will also sport some hefty multimedia features, such as video chat, internet access, digital photo viewing, digital audio and video. Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi introduced it as a "Super computer for computer entertainment."

I can understand how with wireless connectivity, you can begin to make consoles looks "clean." There is a fine line between a clean look and a vacant look, and the PS3 looks vacant. Why not have some sort of LCD on the front? Or SOMETHING worth while. At least the 360 has integrated something nice into it's Power button.

Oh, and slot loading means no dual-disc usage for all of you music fans. Yay sony.

Haha.... It does look like a scanner! Also, noticed how the system is ROUNDED. All of you people who complained about the 360's stackability, looks like this console will have to be on top.

2.18 teraflops, jesus christ. thats a behemoth. nd the design is the exact opposite of 360's double concave. Hmm, the reason i stuck with xbox was cause of its superior graphic capability, im a sucker for hardware. If it wasnt for live, i would convert right now.

I think it's well known that PS3 has the advantage hardware wise. However, your hardware is only as good as you can utilize it. The developers tools have a big part in how well the games are able to turn out in the end.

I'm not feeling the design either, but I will be interested in what big games are slated for the PS3, because that would influence me on whether to get it or not. But at the rumoured price, I wouldn't get it at launch.

...awesome. Now it seems it's all down to the games. Both systems will rule by the looks of it. If Sony can make HDTV games and 5.1 surround standard, like Microsoft then I think they will have me won over. Can't wait till the battle begins!

Personally, I like the PS3 look better than the Xbox 360 look.

The console looks pretty solid to me, I like it. However, if that's the official controller then they've lost their own mind. You stick with the controller that has been working for years. There's no need to design something so fucking stupid like that.

It is a shocking change. I thought they may have advanced it slightly, but I was not prepared for the major change that the dualshock 3 is. I am hoping that this controller will be better for a wide array of gamers (Frankly, the PS2 controller is too crampt for my tastes).

I'm feelin' the look of the PS3 a lot. It might even sway some of the people complaining that the 360 is not pitch black and doesn't fit in with their HT/HTPC setups (which I completely understand). For me, I'm getting giddy as hell watching these developments.

But to be honest, I'm leaning towards the PS3 as of this moment for two reasons:

1. I have a PSP already, and would love to see the interactivity between the two and ...
2. More time to save up so that I can actually own that beast on launch day (and of course lament the loss of Halo 3).

Just my $0.02.

EDIT: Make that three reasons. Backwards compatability with PS1 and PS2 games.

When I saw the desing, I didn't like it. When I saw the controller, I nearly peed. Its terrable. I hope that the disclaimer at the bottem of the screen is true...that thing looks like shit.

anyways the specs on the system definitly sound awsome. guess we'll have to wait and see how it all works out.

I don't know, I just like Xbox better. I'm admittedly biased. Can one really have backwards compatibility and still offer state of the art graphics? Well, I guess we'll see. At the end of the day, neither system will have games that take full advantage of their capabilities, sot a teraflop here and a ramchip there ain't gonna make a big difference. Like Colby said, "if, ifs and buts were candies and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas".

If I get another console (which I'm sure I will, even though I never play my xbox), I'll get the Xbox, just because I'm familiar with it, and I like pudding.

And people were doubting the PS3 hardwarewise. Like the design better than the X2 but it will still be destined for under the tv. Prefered the fake one from a day ago. The controller though, wtf is up with that? I hate their dualshock controllers, so at least this is a change but man I'm going to have to feel that thing first. It does not look comfortable.
