I have a 50 inch Samsung HDTV that supports 720p and 1080i. Which one is best? I really can't tell the difference when I switch the 360 from one to the other.

Since the native resolution of games for the 360 run at 720p....you are better off with 720p

Depends on the source. Fast motion, sports tend to look better on 720p. Film sources benefit from the higher resolution of 1080i but it really depends on what you are looking at and personal taste. The real answer is 1080p. ;)

^-^ Agreed... 1080p is the sh*t. But I'd use the 720p over the 1080i.

My question is the following:
My TV only supports 480p or 1080i. If a 360 game does not show "1080i support" on the back of the case, is it safe to assume the Xbox 360 "upscales" the 720p to 1080i, or will it simply default to 480p? I have not bought Madden 2006 for fear that the game will not support high-def on my TV.

If you are using the HDTV cables all games will default to 720p, unless they are 1080i native. The 360 won't scale anything for you, your TV will either upscale it to 1080i or downscale it.
So, if you have the HDTV features enabled on 360 and the game doesn't support 1080i, then your TV is recieving a 720p signal. Then it's up to your TV with how it's going to display the image.

That's pretty crappy that the 360 won't scale to 1080i. A good number of CRT HDTV's that do not support 720p won't take a 720p signal at all so it is impossible for them to scale it to 1080i. That means those sets will only take a 480p signal from the 360 with games that only support 720p. You would think that even if the game is made for 720p that the 360 could scale that render to 1080i. It won't be true 1080i, but it will be a helluva lot better than 480p.
Just another reason why I won't get a 360 yet.

In 2001, and its irrelevant. While MS did promise HD gaming with the original Xbox, it took 2 years to for it to arrive and then virtually no support and little improvement in actual image quality. Gave up on that a long time ago. At least they kept 480p standard which put it above the PS2 and Gamecube and it lived out its life.
Now the Xbox 360 is supposed to be the HD era of gaming, yet it won't scale 720p only games to 1080i? Hell, you don't even need to do any other rendering, just use video processing to upconvert it to 1080i. Won't be true 1080i, but like I said above, it is better than having to downrez to 480p.
Personally, I wish 1080i never existed as an HD resolution. Interlaced imaging should have died with SD. Then we wouldn't even be in this position, and 1080p would actually be an ATSC standard.

Apparently the 360 does scale 720p games to 1080i if it is selected, so they did get that right.
