View Full Version : Sony/Nintendo: Are they ****ting their pants?

Well, we won't know what either company has up their sleeve until E3, but what do you think?

I honestly have no idea, the PS3 is supposed to be really powerful...that cell processor, and I know nothing about the revolution yet.

Cell = will tank like Emotion did.

No clue about Nintendo but Sony surely won't sit on their ass, and if they do they will be f**ked. Now that we know what MS is bringing to the table, and the new features I want to see what new stuff Sony brings, if anything.

Live is no doubt the best service, but I still will never pay for it again. The free 'limited' version has promise and that is what I want to know what Sony is going to be answering.

I've heard that Sony really isn't sure what to do with their technology...true statement?

Lynx, why do you not want to pay for Live? Just wondering, it seems worth the money to me.

I'm sure Sony and Nintendo both have plans. However, they might not do much because the 360 is a ****ing beast. Some people are probably a little nervous.

I doubt Sony is getting nervous. I believe they know what they are doing. I don't believe Nintendo is getting nervous, because they don't care what anyone else does. They just go and do their own thing.

I wasted $130 on Live for two years (bought a kit discounted but before I could use it MS autorenewed my account charging the full price :curse: ) which I probably only played a months worth. My own fault really, but I just didn't enjoy it as much as PC online gaming which to this day is still free, minus those MMORPGs which I don't play. Plus I never figured out what you were actually paying for.

But with the announcement of the free weekends, if that's all it was, I'll probably check it out plus I'm glad they are allowing everyone to get downloadable content and game patches which is probably the real reason they did it.

Anyway, I had my doubts but X2 is looking up. :booty:

I've done the same thing. Last year I said I would actually take advantage of XBL, but there was a two week span during the summer that I was playing XBL constantly. That's it. I spent $100 CAD for 2 weeks. Unfortunately they already charged me for this years service, and I've maybe played XBL a couple times.

Xbox 360 > All next-gen

LynxFX

Is this the in thing to do by companies that seem to only have one other competitor? Release scant info the day of their competitors big reveal? ATI and Nvidia, MS and Apple, Intel and AMD, and now PS and Xbox. All of them have consistently done it every single time there is a major announcement/release. It just seems like lowbrow tactics which make me want to boycot their product, except since they all have done it, it is hard to do that without moving to Amish country. :booty:

My source at Nvidia, who is currently doing emulation for the graphics chip for the PS3 said that it would be a miracle to have the PS3 out this year. So either a miracle has happened, or Sony is swinging low.

Yes I cant wait for a large amount of the PS3s to have defects due to the rushed launch. Only if they rush it of course.

Something tells me that rushing this brand new cell technology is a receipe for disaster.
But Sony is smart, they'll just do whatever and their established fanbase will carry them through. Even if Sony forgoes an online service and comes out way after the 360 does, they'll be alright.
Nintendo on the other hand will probably need a miracle right now. I mean they need something seriously golden between Zelda, Samus and Mario to stay afloat in this war.
Hell, the Xbox.. the underdog in the console business outsold them in the long haul.
Nintendo, the corner piece of home console history.. certainly experienced in the business got outran by a new console that has 1 or 2 flagship games and one major icon mascot.

The thing to watch is how Sony counters the 360 in the next upcoming months and if Nintendo is going to bite on the bait that MS set out.

Sony won't rush it by a whole year.
And Nintendo could care less, they know who they want their target audience to be.

I would say that every system will be worth owning again (cus I owned them all this gen) each for their own reasons. I cant wait.

Sony is still the 800 pound gorrilla. I'd say they're going to mess up, if they do, because of over-confidence, not because of fear.

I cant wait.I have also owned every system this gen, but I can't say I'll be buying Nintendo's stuff anymore. I'm tired of their "innovation" bull****. Just give me what I WANT for the love of God! I could care less if you think sticking your dick in the console is a neat way to turn it on, just give us the good games :)

if you want innovation, check out yankeez new thread...

anyway... i agree with a lot of you, this cell technology is brand new, just because 3 ghz on a AMD proc is freakin amazing.. its not that amazing on a P4....

which is the point... 3ghz could mean little with this new technology, hell, they should just stick with traditional hardware... i bet coding for that bugger is gonna be a *****

It should be interesting in a week when E3 happens... Sony has the fanbase behind it, but MS is gaining ground quicker than I could have imagined with their hype machine. All MS needs to do is solidify it's foreign markets (i.e. not blow japan) and it has it made. Sony... I don't know. This whole cell thing is a bad idea from the get-go. 9 processors? that will make it great for rendering CG scenes, but not too great on the gameplay front when developers figure out it will take 3 years to develope what they could make on the Xbox in 6 months.

My nintendo hopes are dying. The GC was a good system, but not spectacular. I look at it as a dreamcast with a little more marketing behind it. Unless they pull the coolest thing ever out of their ass for it, or offer free BJ's from princess peach or zelda upon purchasing the console...

In every thing I've read or watched about the xbox360 since the MTV Show says it's a chip with 3 3.2ghz cores on it... (basically 3 3ghz cpus) so yeah that's a bit different then a P4 3ghz cpu. And something about each of them doing two (2) threads .. not just one (which I assume regular cpus do)

Also read in that little 6 page article over at team xbox that the graphics chip is something that isn't even planned for 2006 or possibly early 2007 for PC's

So on the hardware side of things, I'd say it's a pretty big freaking deal. Add in the fact that games were easier to design for xbox, and then XNA is suppose to make things easier...

The PS2 had all this hype about how great their emotion crap is .. and then it was difficult to make games for. If sony learned it's lesson, then maybe things will be different.. but I would bet things won't be much different. Other then the system being hyped to do so many things and will still won't be able to produce. Will PS3 games look good? OF COURSE .. Will they be close to Xbox360 graphics? Most Likely .. Will PS3 be a better overall system.. NOPE. Will all the fanboys out there cry "it's about the games!" Most likely! The only thing that is going to finally get people to realize that MS will always make a better system then sony will be when every type of game is made over and over and over and over again for the xbox 360. Maybe we can get FF20 through 45 on the xbox

what exactly is the cell processor? i heard they were linking up 8, now kraft says nine.

IM really interested in what they are trying to do with it. Is it like xbox360's 3 triple core thing, but with 9 cores?!

i really just dont have a really firm idea what they are trying to accomplish, and how it will blow 360 out of the water...

guess will have to wait for e3 to find out

I can't wait until it's been revealed. All this build up to it sucks! I just want to know now!
And I want to play the xbox360 now! lol

man they now know what xbox 360 has to offer and all they have to do is work hard and better what the 360 brought out.
but you see, xbox 360 will be the only console coming out this november, people will buy it for christmas and not have to choose between consoles, so 360 will sell very rapidly. Now a year later a new POWERHOUSE PS3 comes out lets say and lots of people have a 360 and are happy playing live and Halo 2 if its backwards capable. Now Halo3 will come out supposedly when PS3 comes out. So all these people with the 360 are gonna buy a PS3 and a 60 dollar game not even for the PS3? So which one do you think they will pick the one where they have to start all over or their year old system that they have customized and have live and whatnot, all they have to do is buy a game whereas buying a new system and a new games and accesories. You see how smart MS really is. Dont matter how powerful the PS3 will be. people will get it this november and buy more games next november for christmas rather than a new system and new games and new acceories. see its like spending 130 for two new games rather than 400+ on a new PS3 system with a game and maybe some accesories.

I don't think Nintendo cares anymore, they pratically said it themselves. They don't want to compete against Microsoft and Sony so that's why their target audience is everyone (even those who never play games).
Now Sony is probably shitting themselves, and hiding it through their famed hype machine. In other words their cockiness is a way of hiding their fear, that and pre-rendered clips :D.

Tim sweeney from epic said that developing for the ps3 was easy as developing on a high end pc. He said openGL and programmable shaders are just some of the reasons they love to work with anything nvidia. And sony already partnered with epic unreal engine as middleware for there console and plus you can still use sdk as well. The processor has one core and nine processors and only uses eight because one is disabled for redundancy. Basically they can all use multiple threads at a billion calculations a second. Though to the average gamer that just means that graphics are going to be 10x better than last generation. I am looking forward to microsoft 360 and sony's ps3 because I purchased them both last gen and they never let me down and both had online play. Sony is doing the same thing they did last gen with the dreamcast, let them launch first and launch with a ton of AAA titles coming to market in the first 6months. They did it with dreamcast and they will do it with 360. And they still did great and killed the dreamcast in the same time. Not saying there are going to kill 360 but they are making sure that microsofts early launch is not going to dethrone them by having AAA titles like metal gear solid 4, Devil may cry 4, Tekken 6, and I-8 as launch games to be reconed with.

Yeah stifler they pretty much have made a heck of a lot of technology that is open to any middleware tools (sdk, renderware, unreal engine) they definately are not going the ps2 route in making the console hard to program for. So I think they have it covered about the technology part, it is just going to be hard not to have a gorgeous game on ps3 with all the technology they have (nvidia g7 6800 ultras "2", large core with nine processors, xdr ram, etc, etc)
