I figured it'd be kind of lame to put your personal family pictures up as spam. Or have I missed out on the latest trend?

It is called piggybacking. They find a site with a good pagerank (XO has a five which is pretty decent) and then try to get a link to their site from it. It gets his site higher pagerank by association.
