Here's an interesting bit of very good news from Iraq, from the New York Times of all places (albeit buried on page 6 of the paper paper). It turns out the U.S. Marines "have for months been seeing a strange new trend in the already complex Iraqi insurgency." The military calls it "red on red," or enemy-on-enemy, fire:

Insurgents, they say, have been fighting each other in towns along the Euphrates from Husayba, on the border, to Qaim, farther west. The observations offer a new clue in the hidden world of the insurgency and suggest that there may have been, as American commanders suggest, a split between Islamic militants and local rebels.

A United Nations official who served in Iraq last year and who consulted widely with militant groups said in a telephone interview that there has been a split for some time.

"There is a rift," said the official, who requested anonymity, citing the sensitivity of the talks he had held. "I'm certain that the nationalist Iraqi part of the insurgency is very much fed up with the Jihadists grabbing the headlines and carrying out the sort of violence that they don't want against innocent civilians."

The nationalist insurgent groups, "are giving a lot of signals implying that there should be a settlement with the Americans," while the Jihadists have a purely ideological agenda, he added.

If this is right, it would seem to vindicate both Vice President Cheney's much-maligned view that the indigenous insurgency is in its "final throes" and the "flypaper" theory that liberating Iraq is drawing in terrorists and forcing them to face the U.S. military.

I think the flypaper theory has been pretty obvious, still not sure about final throes. There are still generals over there who disagree and I trust what they say more than I do Cheney.

Still, better them shooting each other than shooting at us.

It seems like the people of Iraq would be pissed about these foriegners coming in, posing as Iraqis, and fighting/murdering innocent civilians. Maybe Syria should be our next target.

I'd rather not think about a next target right now, thank you. But yeah, the Syrians do seem to be kind of dicks.

Back when the war started, I mean, right when it started, I theorized that Sadaam's best move would be to send what illegal weapons he had to Syria. I think there's a good chance that's what happened.

If he did have them, that's certainly possible. I don't doubt he at least had some illegal weapons, I just don't think it was at all what we claimed they were. Hell, we wouldn't give up any sort of perceived advantage just because the rest of the world told us to, I doubt he was/is any different.

Still, I'd rather if we do go into Syria, that we go in because of Syria, not chasing Saddam's supposed WMD's.

I only meant to illustrate the possible past behavior of the Syrian government. It's pretty well known the majority of these jihadist are coming from Syria. Oh, to be a dictator in the middle east. Abuse your country all you want, because at the end of the day you can blame America for the ills of your country. Then you get to go have sex with a new woman your men pulled off the streets.

I believe Syria is runing scared. Who would have thought what happened in Lebannon this year would have ever happened. They are also actively patrolling their borders too.

As much as I think good portions of that part of the world would serve the rest better as a glass parking lot, I do understand that much of this territory is like the wild west.

I have never bought the argument that Iraq dumped weapons into Syria. I just do not see what Syria would have to gain. I would have to see actual evidence of a Syrian conspiracy before I would even contemplate any action. All I have heard to date is talking head opinions.

Either way, I want to see Iraq settled first before any more major military campaigns.

I don't think that Syria would ever want to run the risk of taking Saddam's weapons unless they were absolutely sure we could never find out, because they don't want our crosshair on them.
