Rumours are flying here in Australia that Microsoft plans to spoil the scheduled Australian March launch of the PS3 by bringing a black Xbox 360 console onto the market at the same time.
It is rumoured to feature a 120 GB HDD and a HDMI port.

Given that I purchased a new system at the 360's launch I would feel a bit pissed off that a new and better system will be available for the same price as mine was when new and all within 12 months! Now I know why MS would want to launch a counter attach to Sony's console domination and I hope xbox 360 prevails. But if true this move alienates a large portion of existing xbox users.

Maybe I am jumping the gun but if it's true it does not give me much confidence in Microsoft.

I don't know if confidence is really an issue here.

So far this is just a rumor and the latest I've heard (although admittedly I haven't paid much attention) is that this model won't show up until Q4 at the earliest.

Even then, it's been widely speculated even before the 360 launch that an upgraded version would be out on the market eventually. There is always a price for being an early adopter. The only argument that even makes much sense in favor of being upset is that this will come standard w/ the hd-dvd drive. And unless you care about that for movies I still don't see a reason to be upset. HD-DVD will not become the standard game format for the simple reason that it will exclude not only a large part of the base, but really the most devoted.

Is it going to happen in March? I seriously doubt it. Maybe in Q4, but hell, if you're posting on xbox sites this really should come as no surprise.

Na confidence is a big issue here! What if MS decide to add a feature that will not be supported by early machines in the future i.e an upgraded graphics processor? I beleive this sets a precedence and that is why I will have no confidence IF the black xbox360 is released.

They can put on an HDMI port without changing the graphics card. I don't see why you're that upset over it, being that MS is doing this to be able to seem more sellable in competition. I would love to see an HDMI port, larger hard drive and a base HD-DVD to be included on this system. I'd buy another in a heartbeat and sell my current one, just dealing with the loss.

Meh, the HD-DVD drive is a non-seller to me. What is the purpose when you can download high def content? This is where the move is going to.

A loss is exactly what we have to put up with here! If true all existing xbox 360 users will face a substantial loss off the re sale value of their machine if a new version is introduced.

A major up-grade to a console so soon after launch is UNPRECIDENTED and shows a lack of respect for 360 owners who in good faith purchased a machine that would be top of the (xbox) line for at least 3 years based on previous console launches. Now within 12 months a new and improved version might been released. It's like ford releasing a car with a V6 engine as standard then no more than 8 months later offer the same car for the same price but with a V8 motor as standard (a similar example of the one here did actually take place and resulted in big compensation losses for the car company involved).

YOU as xbox owners should be up in arms about this possible up-grade and we should be taking steps to protect OUR INTERESTS AS CONSUMERS and not become victims of a sales battle between two multi national corporations.

Welcome to the world of technology. It loses value as soon as you pull it off the lot.

I don't plan on selling mine. I don't plan on buying the upgraded version. I will still get to play everything on the 360. I am somehow not indignant over the fact that something that has been a known as a possibility since before launch is probably coming true.

Doesn't matter to me. The only reason I see the need for a bigger hard drive is to rent movies, and I don't do that, plus if they add a HDMI port that won't affect me since I don't have an HDTV. I don't think that it is not showing respect to costumers, I think that it it will give consumers more options. Plus if it does come out, possibly Q4 of 2007, remember that it will be the second year the 360 has been out.

If they are upgrading the components of the system but not the processor or software ... then we can still play all of our 360's just the same .. .I think this is better than coming out with a new console.

I definitely wouldn't mind a nice 120 GB HD to put on my current console though

what do you expect, microsoft knew all it had to do was be first to win the race, like the ps2, and look... now everyone has a 360, and ps3 and wii sales are nowhere near what they were expected to be.

no microsoft is actually going to release a system thats worth the damn price tag and force everyone to upgrade.

I bet they offer the new black version with mabey a bigger hard drive, and I have read the processors in them will be smaller, but that's to help efficiency of the machine and production costs. I've talked to an MS rep where I work, and in so many words..."only 2% of public own HDTVs with 1080p", therefor they won't be adding full 1080p support to any new versions of the 360. The new ones might have bigger HDD and HDMI built in, but it won't have any features that will absolutely say you HAVE to have a new black version. I would think that after 2 years on the market, they would release the black version, taking a page out of Nintendo's textbook. I think 2 years after release is a good time frame for Microsoft to upgrade their machine. Sony took 3 years or so to make version 2 of the playstation 2, so to have no confidence is pretty dumb. You have to look at it from their point of view. They have a machine that's been out for 2 years this Nov, and while we can expect the PS3 to be picking up steam around that time, and the Wii to be increasing their fan base, they need a marketing device to continue increasing their marketshare.
