Despite the allure of the newly released Wii and PlayStation 3, it was Microsoft's Xbox 360 which came out of the Christmas season with the most sales - albeit by a nose.

With limited supply of the PlayStation 3 and Wii, the Xbox 360 was sitting ready and waiting to be snapped up by gift-frenzied shoppers. According to US retail market watcher NPD, approximately two million Xbox 360 consoles were sold between the beginning of November and Christmas Day.

The Wii faired well, shifting 1.8 million units from launch (November 19) until Christmas Day, and had the console arrived earlier in November would have likely been the biggest seller for the period.

It was the PlayStation 3 that suffered most though, with sales of only 750,000 units from its November 17 launch until Christmas Day.

Although no exact figures are available for December, you can estimate based on the systems' November figures: 511,000 Xbox 360s, 476,000 Wiis and 197,000 PS3s. This means during December up until Christmas day, approximately 1.5 million Xbox 360s were sold, 1.3 million Wiis and 550,000 PlayStation 3s.
