What a flashback this game has been. Got my copy free w/ the purchase of my DS at Toys 'R Us. I remember absolutely being blown away by this game on the Ninty 64 back in the day, and it's great to see the game on the little screen, now. So far, I'm not very far into the game, I've only recovered 3 or 4 stars. But the game has so far stayed true to the original, while managing to tweak the story just a bit as to allow the action to all take place via Yoshi. One other addition I've come across, though, is Peach's rec-room and the bunny rabbits you have to catch, which really serve no other purpose than justifying the mini-games. I haven't noticed any kind of hiccups or slowdown in the game at all, and while the graphics aren't stunning, they are absolutely great compared to the GBA or SP. Everything runs smoothly and the controls, while different, are spot on, and it handles 3D much better than I had hoped.
At first, though, the game struck me as simpy mediocre. It didn't seem to control well, and that made the platforming seem like a chore. But once I read the manual a bit, and figured out the buttons, the game really has taken hold of me. The mini-games are mostly just there, but one or two are actually a lot of fun, and challenging. I especially have been enjoying the Wario mini-game where you have to shoot this giant slingshot at parachuting bob-ombs to keep them from landing and destroying these flowers at the bottom of the screen. It starts out as sort of a cute time-killer, but then it just pours on the bob-ombs and puts you to work.
Having played my little brother's DS a bunch, I can't seem to remember the touchscreen being so simple to manipulate. It's really surreal at times, the control you have. It just takes a tiny bit of pressure w/ the stylus, and the DS will pick that up. Extremely cool, the touchscreen, even though in Mario 64 the use of it does seem more like a tacked on gimmick (especially some of the mini-games). One cool thing I found, though, is that at the main screen, if you touch Mario or Yoshi's head in the center, you will be taken to a pretty cool little drawing application. What makes it cool is that whatever you draw, you can then tweak w/ the stylus, creating some pretty trippy, yet stunningly fluid, transformations.
So, yeah, just had to put in a couple pennies on my thoughts about this game, and moreover about the DS. I'm absolutely stoked that I finally picked one up, and can't wait for the Christmas season, as that seems to be when a lot of the better DS games will be releasing. But until then, I'll be playing SM64 and Kirby's Canvas Curse (which I'm gonna pick up this afternoon :ninja: ).
:hail: Nintendo :hail:
