Making the leap and getting with the times. I currently rock a sony mp3 discman, but the thing makes me feel like a barbarian from 1010 BC. I finally decided to make an investment and get myself a compact mp3 player.

I have been shopping around, and I think it will end up being a choice between an iPOD mini, or an Iriver. Anyone have any suggestions or comments on what I should get?

I am looking at a minimum of 1Gb HD size, battery life is important, so is price, and ease of use. I have a budget of about 250.00 canadian..

It's neither an iPod or a iRiver, but...

Creative Zen Micro.

4 Gig - $180 US
5 Gig - $220 US
6 Gig - $250 US

Good Battery life, decent price, intuitive to use.

there is only 1 company that makes the best MP3 players, and that's COWON.

check it out man: http://www.cowonamerica.com/

their players have constantly been ranked number 1 by everyone... it's the TOP OF THE LINE.. when it comes to MP3 players.

Creative is good, but it can't match up with a 35-50 hour battery life, cheaper price and better sound.

Creative is #3 at best when it comes to mp3 players...

Cowon leads the pack, followed by iRiver.. and then Creative and Apple are a toss up...

iRiver simply makes better quality products, that look better and sound just as good if not better then Creative.

Ok I've read countless reviews on MP3 players from tons of sources (cNet, PC Mag, computer shopper, etc.) and I hardly ever see them even review Cowon MP3 players.

And no, iRiver does not sound better than Creative. Creative is the leading sound card manufactuer and their MP3 players carry on the tradition of great sound. The iRiver's are the most function/geek heavy MP3 player, and that is their selling point.

I have a Zen Micro and that would be my recommendation. The Mini is gay and the H10 series from iRiver is buggy.

Check out misticriver.net (i think) for iRiver information.

If you want a smaller player with better battery life go with creative.

CNET.COM gave that Cowon player their highest score.. and called it the iPOD killer.. it's on their site..

Computer Shopper and PC Mag also praised the player...

The reason you don't know much about Cowon is because their products aren't in the United States.. You should know by now, that the best electronics aren't American made...

Quality comes with a price.. and that's why most stay away from Cowon.. But it's the best..

search those sites before you comment...

Go with Creative, regardless of the kind, cause as we all know, iPods are poop :P

Borka, he also said what his budget was.

the Zen Micro is a very good player, but in terms of price, it's in the same range as the competition.

the iPOD mini dropped in price, so did the samsung, zen micro, iRiver, Dell DJ, they are all very similarly priced...

so why buy a Zen Micro, when the Dell DJ is also made by CREATIVE.. and is cheaper...?

iPod all the way. Get it from Best Buy with the extended Warrenty, covers battery replacement.

Also with iPod you can get Dension ICELINK which hooks to your car stero (if it has cd changer controls) and makes your stero think the IPod is a cd changer, none of that crappy FM Transmitter.

I just got the iPod Photo 30gig and I never leave home without it.

Also if iPods are so bad why is it the number one selling Mp3 player? :flipoff:

Just because something is popular, doesn't mean it is good or worthwhile. As I've said, the general public has no taste whatsoever :P

There is nothing wrong with the iPod...

it's a damn fine player, that's very easy to use, has probably the best design and is at the same time very slim and light weight...

the fact is that no matter which player you get, you'll be happy. They all get the job done and will all become your "best friend"... You'll want to carry around your player everywhere.. because you have your whole music collection at your finger tips...

what the iPOD lacks is the features... Other players now have actual video playback, fm tuner, recorder, text viewer, more intuitive software, etc...

IMO the iPOD holds the title of being the easiest to use and best looking player on the market. iTUNES is also a great program that really lets you do everything you want to your iPOD with ease...

Although I own an iPOD right now, the next player I buy, won't be an iPOD.. There is just so many other players out right now that offer better sound, features and most importantly a better price.

Borka, my iPod can import Outlook contact vcards, can story ANY text document, has a schedule calender, games, digital photo slideshows, can be hooked to the television to display photos, can trasnfer pictures directly from digi cams to iPod, plus acts as a portable hard drive to transfer any type of data.

Not to mention the ever growing podcasting

ipod is a Hype mp3 player. Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen's have been tested to have better sound, and are cheaper...and thats what counts, not how many accessories it has available

i've had a nomad jukebox zen xtra 30 GB for 6 months now and i've been very happy with it. battery life is good, sound is excellent. it's a little bulkier than an ipod, but i hardly carry it in my hand, so i dont care

yeah, my iPOD can do that too... lol, we both have the same product here :)

the difference though is just how well it does these things compared to other players...

the quality of the pictures displayed, and the amount of lines of text displayed..

and an iPOD is not recognized/ can't be used without iTUNES...

furthermore, the new players out don't even need a computer to be recognized.. You can simply plug in your player to a digitical camer and transfer photos straight from your camera to your player.

I like my iPOD a lot.. but technology keeps improving daily..and a lot of better players are already out.

you have to take price into consideration.... everything apple puts out is wayy overpriced

soon they will just make MP3 players, since the computer end will go out of business

Well, just ordered myself a 4gig iPod mini using a corporate discount we get with apple. The thing came to 225 canadian tax included with free shipping from the apple store.

I'll put up some pics once I get it in about 3-5 days.
