Halo 3: First Details Emerge
New maps, new weapons, new SKUs, new control schemes.
by Luke Smith, 10/27/2006

In the just-redesigned December issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly (subscribers should have it any day now) a handful of editors took Halo 3's multiplayer game hands-on.

The result? A 17-page cover story and a three-week series of stories on 1UP called "3 Weeks of Halo 3."

Before all of that information ends up in your hands, though -- here's a small taste of what to expect from both EGM and 1UP over the next few weeks:
-What are these new Brutish weapons? What's a Spike Rifle...or a Spike Grenade?
-The Mongoose (the once-scrapped ATV from Halo/Halo 2) is back: Who wants to ride Brokeback?
-Halo 3 will have three retail SKUs: standard, collector's edition, and Legendary. Guess which one comes with a helmet and four discs of content?
-Adding bumpers to the 360 controller means there's some extra real estate for Bungie to play with. Now the left bumper reloads your dual-wielded weapon and the right bumper is the normal reload. What does X do, though? Mum.
-Starting weapon: Bungie thinks they have the "perfect" starting weapon in Halo 3. It's not the pistol, the battle rifle, or the SMG...and it's pretty familiar. How does the new Assault Rifle play?
-One of the new maps, Valhalla, is being called "the new Blood Gulch" -- but this isn't another coat of new paint on the Combat Evolved classic. This is, from-the-ground-up, a brand-new map. How is it?
-What if you could save your own movies from Halo 3's single- and multiplayer gameplay and then rewatch them? In Halo 3, you can.

The game might end up sucking like Halo 2 but it sounds like Bungie is trying hard not to fuck this up.

according to www.aeropause.com

halo3 will have its own built in machinima engine (in a sense) which will allow the user to record gameplay directly to their hd

maybe they can "borrow" the nba2k7 reelmaker idea, and allow people to make/edit movies and add music

First off, screen shots have never done a game justice... even less horrible pictures of a magazine article.

Secondly, it is still very early and a lot of the textures were just placeholders so that Bungie can show some of the game to the media. When the game ships, it will all be high res textures and it will look stunning in HD.

ACTUAL high def scans can be found here:

Bungie Speaks up: Entire Bungie Weekly Update (http://www.bungie.net/News/TopStory.aspx?cid=9092)
The leaked scans this morning caused a huge fuss, and we’re not going to discuss any of that stuff here today – suffice it t say that subscribers will be getting their issues of EGM in the next few days, and they can read all about Halo 3 multiplayer (and more) in that magazine, and see some images that aren’t leaked on the interwebs already. I think you’ll find some very interesting and exclusive insights to come. The hi-res images will be available in all sorts of outlets eventually, including this here website, and we’ll go into more detail – and answer some of your questions at that time. And that won’t be the only Halo 3 info this year… there are one or two surprises still to come.

I'm tempted to get the legendary version. as long as the helmet is wearable.

edit: nevermind. the helmet doesn't look wearable :(

they're saying it's "cat sized" whatever that means... looks like Nurb might be getting a new avy soon.

That doesn't change the fact that those screens are unimpressive vman. Blinx prettymuch hit the nail on the head.

I'd also like to think that if they were going to show a game to press, they'd try to put their best foot forward. If not, their lazy and that doesn't bode well.

Well if they make it look how the trailer looks, like they say they are, it will be an awesome looking game. It sounds as if Bungie is making this one great game. I know I can't wait. Isn't it kind of weird that a bunch of Halo 3 news came out when Gears of Wars is getting ready to hit store shelves? Could that be Microsoft saying hey, buy a 360 here is what Halo 3 is going to be like, and Gears of War is out. I don't know, I'm just thinking.

You're an idiot if you think those screens arent impressive. Compare them to a Halo 2 screen and get a brain.

Thats not what I said nut sack. I said you're stupid if you can't see a clear and highly detailed improvement from Halo2 to this graphically.

Well it is said that it will change the Halo franchise. Here are some things I think may be an option.
A disarm move.
A different melee move, like one that is hig risk, hige reward style.
They said something how you can use it while you are riding on the back of the ATV or when you are flying from the man-cannon, so what if it is a jet pack thing.
Or it could start the video recording feature.

Or it could start the video recording feature.

They wouldn't assign a primary key to begin recordings.

If anything, it would be the back button.

But your other ideas would be cool.

Maybe even a defensive move that last a few seconds. I heard a rumor that you would be able to pick up a Jackyl shield which has its own shield meter.

I heard that the X button is used for Master Chief to transform into an Elite. He finds this braclet artifact which allows an Elite to gain power, but in Master Chief's hand, or arm I should say, it allows him to transform into an Elite.

Is this how rumors start? Bullcrap like that? I wonder who believed it. =]

Yeah I was thinking that they would use the back button for the recording thing, thats just what a guy posted on the gamespot forums.
But going on the idea of the shield, what if it was a melee button that controlled your left hand. So if you are dual wielding, you won't lose a gun when you melee. Or if you had a shield thats how you pick it up.
