'Halo' stomps into studios

Microsoft gets game in bidding war

By BEN FRITZ

HOLLYWOOD -- Monday was Master Chief's day in Hollywood.

Messengers outfitted as the kick-ass space marine from Microsoft vidgame "Halo" hit the studios Monday with a screenplay based on the bestselling franchise.

Script is by "28 Days Later" scribe Alex Garland, who was paid $1 million by the software giant to pen an adaptation that meets the approval of its execs and the game's creators at subsid Bungie Studios (Daily Variety, Feb. 4).

Microsoft also brought in former Columbia Pictures prexy Peter Schlessel to help it handle the project and serve as a producer in some capacity.

According to numerous studio people, Microsoft and its reps at CAA are seeking an advance of $10 million against 15% of the gross and strict control of development. Winning studio would have to follow a "bible" created by game developers to make sure any changes to the script don't alter the universe established in the first two "Halo" games that will continue in future sequels for the Xbox.

Microsoft was apparently looking for a very quick response from studios, possibly as soon as late Monday.

Studio partner also would have to move quickly into production, with a goal of starting by January.

New Line and DreamWorks have already passed on the project due to its high cost and concerns about the script. In addition, Sony is believed to have not been included because of its PlayStation division's competition with Microsoft.

According to studio sources, several others are at least potentially interested, though it's not clear yet if any would be willing to come in with an eight-figure bid.

"Halo" is the first turnkey rights project in several years that has created such an intense level of buzz in Hollywood. Combined, the two "Halo" games have sold more than 13 million units and grossed more than $600 million in the past four years, making it one of the most successful franchises in vidgame history.

It's particularly popular among young males, who make up the core gamer demo and often drive film grosses.

Because of its value to its Xbox unit, Microsoft has been particularly protective of "Halo," refusing to sign the kind of licensing deal typical to most film adaptations. Instead, tech company hired Garland last year with the intention of moving forward only if it could sell a script and rights deal that met its approval for maintaining the property.

As a result, sources close to those who read the script Monday indicated that it was particularly dense and loyal to the game's world, which features a rich alien mythology, but relatively little in character development.

Those who read it did so under watchful eyes, however. Master Chief apparently sat close by at each studio with strict orders to take the script back to space marine HQ once studio execs had finished reading it.

Also, yes, they really sent Master Chief.

Well i sure hope someone picks this up, i think the story in the game would make for a real great movie. I think even a animation film would be good, isn't pixar done with disney soon?
I'd love to see what pixar could do with it.

Yes, this game would make a great CG movie. 28 days later was awful I hope this doesn't go that way.

I think its a good thing that MS is making sure the movie stays true to the game (i guess that means no love interest for MC), but bad that their aren't a lot of people interested...that means MS could have to 'settle' for someone, and they may end up scrapping the entire thing...

Someone will eventually pick it up, it will happen one day. Glad to see there is some kind of direction it's heading at least.

I'm so happy they are going to follow the "bible" and won't let it turn into what the Doom movie is going to be.

I would rather see it scrapped then end up like that D&D movie...

MS's strict control on this project could go either way, kill it or make it soar. If it was a competent filmmaker creating all of these rules and making sure everyone followed them and the Studios didn't butt in, fine, but what do the game makers and MS know about making a good movie? Their idea might be stellar for a game, but how well will it translate to film? But to be fair, they could be sitting on an excellent script.

We must not forget that LOTR's was picked up by the very last studio they had scheduled a meeting with and we all know how that turned out. :)

This needs to be controlled by either Bungie or Eric Nyland (the guy who wrote the books?) Remember that bungie composed the storyline for the games, it's not like they are new to making decent storylines.
If someone who isn't a fan of the games does this I guarantee we will have a Batman 3, 4, Daredevil, Electra etc on our hands.
This needs to be dark, violent and taken seriously.

How hilarious would it be if Microsoft asked Sony to make the film :D

But seriously, this movie would have to be rated atleast PG-13, preferably rated R...they need to make it dark, evil, and gory as hell to make it a bad ass movie. I hope they don't make it out to be like a modern day Robocop.

I haven't read the novels so this is just by going by the game story lines, but nothing was dark or overly violent in either Halo movies. Just your typical sci-fi romp in space with ET's. The novels may get into more gory and dreary detail, I don't know.

Anyway, if it does get made, I don't see it ever going beyond a PG-13 rating. Episode III would probably be considered a darker movie than Halo's first outing.

I do see where they could go for the R in terms of violence and pure gore but IMO that in itself is a departure from the games.

I see the elites being of the Predator violence class, I am tired of pansy ass villians. If you don't think heads exploding from sniper rounds and possibly the flood eating people R type violence I dunno what would be.
Just don't let george lucas near the grunts or god help us they will all have Dutch accents or some shit. Did anyone catch the screenshots of the grunts with no masks? they had like jagged teeth and looked very mean.
Bungie should really let us here at Xbox Circle decide what will happen with this movie...who's with me? :D

Ah Christ here comes the begining of the end.
It won't be R. They'll market it at least as PG13 to get a wider audience in. That means a lot of implied violence and certain elements toned down. I can see any instance of the flood played down because in reality.. the flood is fucking scary if done right.

I can see the story being transposed to movie. But I see the inevitable high speed karate wire fights being added, a total CGI fest and a love interest side story. They'll intentionally introduce a female character in there so they can complete the hollywood blockbuster formula.

I can't see this as being a good movie. Look at all the people that crap on Halo 2 for not being enough like Halo CE. Imagine everyone going fuckwild at the mere instance that the movie strays from the story arc we're familiar with. People will pick this movie apart.. Duh.. the warthog doesn't sound like that.. um.. the battle rifle ejects spent rounds from the left not the right.. Cortana's ass doesn't look like that.. and so on.
Plus we'll have to factor in the product placement spots. There will be a moutain dew spot somewhere.
A Halo movie is a fan's wet dream. But I forsee a fiasco in the end. There is a lot of unmovie friendly elements to Halo. A hero who never shows his face, a female character that is rarely seen but is integral to the story, enemies that will have to be CGI to look right. I would almost rather see an entire CGI movie like the Final Fantasy movie than a live action movie of this.

Oh well.. let the suckage begin.

The update today is that Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox are working on a deal to split the cost 50/50.

Apparently the scripted got turned down by everyone else.

He IS real!

I suppose we can expect them to slap this thing out just in time for next spring and the launch of Halo 3 and the PS3, eh?

I'm predicting it's gonna suck.
